You shouldn't pick sloes until after the first frost. They, like parsnips coincidently, don't get any sweetness until they get a little frost. Freezing them after they have been picked will make them burst so you won't need to prick them. You don't have to trek too far out of town to pick them. Totteridge common is dripping with sloes.
